Pico do Arieiro: Madeira’s sunrise worth getting up for

At 1,818 metres, Pico do Arieiro is my favourite place to watch the sun come up in Madeira. Go prepared for cold, wind, crowds and the chance that cloud hides the whole view.

My quick take

Go for sunrise if you are happy to make an early start without any promise of a cloud sea. The view can be extraordinary, but this is a high mountain at night, not a viewpoint to rush through in flip-flops.

Webcam, forecast and trail status

Check before you leave. Every time.

A clear forecast in Funchal does not tell you what is happening at the summit. Check the webcam, the Pico forecast and the official trail notice the evening before, then once more before you set off. They answer three different questions: can you see, will it feel safe to be there, and is the PR1 accessible?

How to do sunrise without making the morning harder

Give yourself more margin than you think you need. The road and car park fill before dawn, and the best colour usually arrives before the sun itself clears the horizon.

  1. 1

Set the plan the night before

Check the three live sources above and look up the sunrise time for your date. Pack your layers, shoes and torch before bed.

  2. 2

    Leave margin for parking

The summit is far more popular than it used to be. Park only where it is safe and legal; do not turn a full car park into a blind-road problem for everyone else.

  3. 3

Keep your footing in the dark

Stay on the marked, lit approach and use your phone torch or a head torch if you walk before daylight. Do not wander towards an edge just to find a quieter photo angle.

  4. 4

    Have the warm stop ready

On the way up or back down, I stop at Abrigo do Poiso for a coffee, hot chocolate or poncha. It is especially welcome when the wind has been cutting through your jacket.

Warm up at Abrigo do Poiso

It is not a destination meal. It is a useful, comforting pause on a cold mountain morning: something quick to eat, a coffee, hot chocolate or a poncha before you carry on with the day.

That is the sort of stop I would make before sending a visitor straight back down to Funchal.

Getting to the summit

You can reach Pico do Arieiro by car, taxi, sunrise tour or scheduled bus. For most visitors who want sunrise, the first three are the useful options. If you are still deciding whether to hire one, read getting around Madeira.

Car

The simplest way to catch sunrise, but arrive with time to park. The road is mountainous and the final approach is dark before dawn; drive it at a pace that feels comfortable, not at the pace of the car behind you.

Plan a car-based day

Scheduled bus

A small Horários do Funchal bus leaves central Funchal at 06:00 and 13:30 and reaches the summit at 06:45 and 14:15, for €3 each way. The early one gets you there before sunrise. The catch is the first bus back, at 12:15.

Stops, times and the summit shuttle

Sunrise tour or taxi

A good option if you would rather not drive the mountain road in darkness. Pick a tour with pickup time tied to the date and weather, not a vague “early morning” promise. Some jeep operators run a private sunrise trip for the whole jeep.

Pico do Arieiro by bus, for €3

It is easy to miss: it has no line number and runs outside the numbered SIGA lines. It is a Horários do Funchal service that leaves from the Teleférico stop, by the cable car in the old town, climbs through Monte and Poiso, and stops at the car park and the summit. Pay the driver in cash.

The 06:00 bus reaches the top at 06:45, before sunrise on every day of the year. In June and early July the sun is up at about 7:00, so you arrive with only minutes to spare and miss most of the colour before it. From September to March you will be waiting in the dark and cold for half an hour or more, so dress for it. The first bus down is at 12:15: pair the sunrise with the PR1 to Pedra Rija and back, booked for a slot after dawn, or bring a book and a flask.

Pico do Arieiro is not the same thing as doing the PR1

The summit viewpoints are free to visit. The PR1 Vereda do Arieiro is a classified mountain trail with a timed booking and a different level of preparation (see how to book a Madeira trail on SIMplifica). Do not let a beautiful dawn turn into an unplanned mountain crossing.

I have not walked the full PR1, so I will not pretend to give a first-hand review. What I can say is that the official route includes steep terrain and tunnels, and the logistics matter as much as fitness.

Full PR1 to Pico RuivoBook a SIMplifica slot; €10.50. After Pedra Rija it is one-way towards Pico Ruivo. Most people finish at Achada do Teixeira and take a shared taxi back here, €20 a seat. The full PR1 day, step by step.

What to take, even in summer

Coastal weather is not mountain weather. A thin layer that feels fine in Funchal may not be enough at the summit before dawn.

  • A warm mid-layer and windproof outer layer
  • Shoes with grip, not beach footwear
  • Water, even for a viewpoint visit
  • A torch or fully charged phone if you arrive before daylight

Nearby

  • Pico Ruivo Madeira’s highest point and the full PR1 destination.
  • Ribeiro Frio A cool forest stop on the way towards Santana.
  • Santana Traditional houses and a practical next stop after a mountain morning.

Pico do Arieiro works naturally at the start of a day that continues through Ribeiro Frio and Santana, provided the mountain weather is on your side.

Questions about Pico do Arieiro

Is Pico do Arieiro worth visiting for sunrise?

Yes, if you accept that the weather is part of the experience. It is my favourite sunrise on Madeira because you can be high above the central mountains without a long walk. The cloud sea is not guaranteed, though, and the summit can be cold, windy and busy before dawn.

Do I need to book to watch sunrise at Pico do Arieiro?

No booking is needed for the summit viewpoints. A timed booking through SIMplifica is required if you enter the classified PR1 trail, including the short return walk towards Pedra Rija.

Is parking difficult at Pico do Arieiro?

It can be. The summit is popular at sunrise and the upper car park at the summit costs €20 a day and is full long before sunrise (the lower one is €5 a day, with a footpath up). Leave enough time to park and walk to the viewpoint, and do not create a hazard by stopping on the mountain road when spaces are full.

Is there a bus to Pico do Arieiro?

Yes. Horários do Funchal runs a bus without a line number from the Teleférico stop in central Funchal at 06:00 and 13:30, reaching the summit at 06:45 and 14:15. It costs €3 per trip, paid in cash on board, and comes back from the summit at 12:15 and in the evening (19:00 in summer, 18:00 in winter). It does not run on 25 December.

What is the Pico do Arieiro shuttle?

A small bus that only covers the last stretch: the forest-road junction (CAM Florestal), the car park below the summit and the summit. It runs every 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon, costs €1.20 and leaves only with at least 4 passengers. It is useful if you had to park lower down.

What should I wear at Pico do Arieiro?

Wear layers and bring a windproof outer layer. At 1,818 metres, the summit can feel far colder than the coast, particularly when wind arrives before the sun. Shoes with grip and a torch are sensible if you will be walking before daylight.

Can beginners do the PR1 from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo?

Treat the full PR1 as a serious mountain day, not as an extension of the sunrise viewpoint. It has steep terrain, tunnels and a one-way logistics problem after Pedra Rija. If you are new to mountain walking, choose a gentler route and build up to it.
