Do you need a car in Madeira?
For a trip of two days or more, yes, in almost every case. The places worth the trip sit an hour or more from wherever you stay, and buses run on fixed routes and timetables. Keep Bolt or Uber for nights out in Funchal, and a private driver for groups.
My answer for your kind of trip
If you want to see several corners of the island, I would hire a car. You stop where you like and stay for the sunset, instead of living by bus and tour timetables. Going without one is more and more common, and it works if you stay in Funchal and settle for fewer places. These are the trips where the answer changes, or check your own trip.
- 1
One or two days, staying in Funchal
No car. Walk the centre, take the cable car to Monte and use Bolt or Uber for the rest.
- 2
Two days or more, and you want the north and west
Hire a car. Porto Moniz, Seixal, Santana and Paul do Mar are full days out. A car turns them into easy ones.
- 3
Staying in Calheta, Porto Moniz or Caniço
Hire a car. Bolt and Uber cars are rare outside Funchal, and the buses run on a timetable you have to plan around.
- 4
Nights out in Funchal
Leave the car. Park it at the hotel and take a Bolt or Uber. Nobody has to stay off the poncha.
- 5
A big group, or nobody wants to drive
Private driver. Hire a driver or a minibus for the long days and keep the short ones on foot.

Car: from the cheapest offer to a typical one in our searches from Madeira Airport, with full cover, before fuel and parking. Short rentals can cost a little more per day. Tours at the coach price per person (€39), jeep tours from €69. The car link is an affiliate link. How we make money.
Why a car wins in Madeira
Wherever you base yourself, whether Funchal, Caniço, Calheta or Porto Moniz (see where to stay in Madeira), the places you will want to see are on the other side of the island. Porto Moniz, Santana and Paul do Mar are each a long way from at least one of those bases, and the good walks start high in the mountains, far from any bus stop with a useful timetable.
A car also works as your base for the day. Leave a change of clothes, water, snacks and swimming things in the boot, and you can finish a hike, swim in the Seixal or Porto Moniz pools and stay out for sunset without carrying everything on your back.
Parking is the usual worry. Tourist spots get busy, but there is almost always a car park nearby, even if it is a paid one. Hire prices are not excessive either, and I have hired many cars with groups of friends and family visiting the island without anything serious ever going wrong.
Car or bus from Funchal
Times by car are for normal traffic. Bus lines were renumbered from March 2026, so older guides show different numbers.
| From Funchal to | By car | By bus |
|---|---|---|
| Porto Moniz | About 50 minutes | Line 340 via São Vicente or 380 via Calheta, one bus a day each |
| Pico do Arieiro | 36 to 40 minutes | Departs Funchal 06:00 and 13:30 |
| Santana | 40 to 45 minutes | Line 801 (formerly 56) |
| Paul do Mar | About 45 minutes | Line 380, one bus a day; back early afternoon on weekdays |
| Caniço (Reis Magos) | About 18 minutes | Line 555 (formerly 155) via Garajau, most of the day |

Hiring a car: with or without a deposit
The first choice at the rental desk is whether you leave a deposit. With a deposit, the company blocks an amount on your credit card and you pay for any damage up to the excess. Without a deposit, the daily price is higher because the full cover is included, and a scratch from a narrow village street does not turn into an argument when you return the car.
I usually hire without a deposit. To compare local and international companies, including what each charges for the no-deposit option, I use DiscoverCars, an aggregator that shows the deposit and excess before you book. The full checklist is in our Madeira car hire guide, with my advice for driving in Madeira on the same page.
How parking works
Street parking is marked by colour. Paid zones are where you will spend most of your parking money, and big car parks fill the gaps near the busiest sights.
- White lines
- Free, though some bays are for residents
- Blue lines
- Paid Monday to Friday 8am–8pm and Saturday 8am–2pm, at the meter or in the iPark Driver app
- Yellow lines
- No parking
- Free days
- Sundays and public holidays

Uber and Bolt: good in Funchal, unreliable elsewhere
Uber and Bolt both work in Madeira. In Funchal you will usually get a car within minutes. Outside the city, cars are much rarer and a request can go unanswered, so never count on an app to bring you back from a trailhead or a north-coast village.
Where they shine is a night out. If you are staying in Funchal, leave the car parked and take a Bolt or Uber to the old town. Nobody has to drive tired or skip the poncha.
Buses: cheap, but you live by the timetable
Madeirans use the bus a lot. All public lines now sit in one network, SIGA, run by Horários do Funchal, CAM and SIGA Rodoeste. The catch for visitors is flexibility: fixed routes, and on the north and west coasts only a few departures a day. Routes, times and the last bus back from each place are in Madeira by bus.
| Ticket | Paid on board | Prepaid on a GIRO card |
|---|---|---|
| Funchal city bus | €2.05 | €1.45 |
| Intercity bus, any distance | €2.65 | €2 |
| Aerobus, airport to Funchal | €6.70* | €5.55 |
| Regional tourist ticket, 1 / 3 / 7 days | Not sold on board | €13.75 / €23 / €36 |
Pay the driver in cash only. *The Aerobus on-board fare is not in the official table; €6.70 is the price reported in 2026 and may have changed. The rechargeable GIRO card costs €0.50 and saves money from the second ride.

No car? Book a day tour and see the whole island
If you would rather not drive, a guided day tour covers the far side of the island with a driver, a guide and stops already planned. Two or three tours plus Funchal on foot is a full holiday without a hire car.
West tour
Cabo Girão, Porto Moniz pools, Seixal and the Fanal laurel forest
The longest drive of any trip, on the most winding roads. The one day most worth handing to someone else.
East tour
Pico do Arieiro, Ribeiro Frio, Santana and the Ponta de São Lourenço viewpoints
Mountain roads with fog and steep bends, and a full day of stops without looking for parking.
Jeep tour
Mountain plateaus, forest tracks and viewpoints above the clouds
Some tracks are not for a rental car, and hire cover usually excludes off-road driving.
Guided levada walk with transfer
A classified trail with a guide, pick-up at your hotel and a lift back from the finish
Solves the linear-walk problem: no car left at the start and no taxi to find at the end.
Most tours pick you up from hotels in Funchal and nearby, which is part of what makes them easy. Check the pick-up area before you book if you are staying further out. If you are hiring a car anyway, you can skip most of these; the jeep tour is the one I would still consider.
See the tours and things to doTaxis and private drivers
Taxis wait at the airport and in the centre of Funchal. Ask the driver for the price before you set off; some use the meter and some quote a fixed fare. Within Funchal, Uber and Bolt usually work out cheaper.
For a large group, or when nobody wants the mountain roads, book a private driver or a minibus. The driver takes you to the stops you choose, or follows a day the company has already planned, and you spend the drive looking out of the window. It costs more than a hire car but works well for the one or two long days of the trip.
Madeira Airport to Funchal: car, Uber, taxi or Aerobus
All four reach Funchal in well under an hour. The Aerobus is the cheapest; Uber or Bolt usually costs less than a taxi and takes you to the door.
| Option | Typical price | Time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hire car | Your rental price | 20 to 25 minutes | Pick it up at the airport and the drive to Funchal is on the fast road. |
| Uber or Bolt | €16 to €30 | About 20 minutes | Price rises with demand; fewer cars late at night. |
| Taxi | €25 to €45 | About 20 minutes | Rank outside arrivals. Meter or fixed fare, so ask the price first. |
| Aerobus | €6.70 on board, €5.55 prepaid | 25 to 40 minutes | Regular departures from outside the terminal. Cheapest, slower with a lot of luggage. |
Typical prices in October 2026, not official fares. Aerobus prepaid fare: SIGA fares table, Portaria 128/2026; the on-board fare is not in the official table and may have changed. Drive time: Visit Madeira.
Questions about getting around Madeira
Is it necessary to rent a car in Madeira?
For a stay of two days or more, a car is the best choice in most cases. The places most visitors want to see, such as Porto Moniz, Santana and the Pico do Arieiro sunrise, are far from Funchal, and buses follow fixed routes and timetables. For a short stay based in Funchal you can manage without one.
Can you see Madeira without a car?
Yes. Stay in Funchal, explore the city on foot and by cable car, and book guided day tours for the west, the east and the mountains. Most tours pick you up from hotels in and around Funchal. Buses reach most villages too, but with few departures on the north and west coasts.
Is there Uber in Madeira?
Yes. Uber and Bolt both work in Madeira and are easy to find in Funchal. Outside Funchal cars are much rarer and a request can go unanswered, so do not rely on them to get back from a trailhead or a village on the north coast.
Can you get around Madeira by bus?
Yes, on the public SIGA network. A Funchal city ride costs €2.05 and an intercity ride €2.65 when you pay the driver, in cash only. Buses work well around Funchal; for the north and west, departures are few, so plan the day around the bus back.
How do I get from Madeira Airport to Funchal?
The drive takes 20 to 25 minutes. Pick up a hire car at the airport, take a Uber or Bolt (roughly €16 to €30), a taxi (roughly €25 to €45; ask the price first), or the Aerobus, which costs €5.55 with a prepaid GIRO ticket or about €6.70 paid on board.
Should I hire a car with or without a deposit in Madeira?
Without a deposit you pay more per day, but the full cover usually means the company does not block a large amount on your credit card and you are not liable for the excess if the car is damaged. With a deposit the daily price is lower and you carry more of the risk. Check what each option covers before you book.
