Where to stay
in Madeira

For a first visit, I would stay in central Funchal. With a car, compare the Lido and quieter Caniço. Choose the west or north when the place you wake up matters as much as the days out.

Which side feels like your holiday?

Four broad areas to help you choose a base. Start with the kind of stay you want, then check the exact town and address.

Approximate planning zones, not administrative boundaries. Mountains and inland villages need an address-specific check. Map: OpenStreetMap and Copernicus DEM GLO-30.

Funchal & surroundings

Funchal · Lido · Câmara de Lobos

Choose central Funchal for restaurants, buses and evenings on foot. The Lido adds larger hotels and pool time. Câmara de Lobos gives you a smaller harbour-town setting nearby, but it is a separate town, not a walkable extension of central Funchal.

Keep in mind: With a car, confirm parking. Without one, the exact location matters more than being somewhere in this zone.

Swimmers and sunbathers on the pebble beach at Ponta do Sol, below a cliff of banana terraces and white houses

South-west Coast

Ponta do Sol · Calheta · Prazeres

Choose this side if you want to spend time in your hotel, visit the sand beach at Calheta and explore the west. Ponta do Sol offers a smaller village setting. For a first trip spread across the island, I still prefer staying near Funchal and visiting this coast for the day.

Keep in mind: A car is strongly recommended for independent sightseeing. A hillside house may be far above the beach, and eastern days involve more driving.

Machico from above, the town spread around its bay below green mountains in cloud, with the sand beach at the water’s edge

East Coast

Caniço · Garajau · Machico · Caniçal

Caniço de Baixo and Reis Magos suit a quieter coastal hotel near Funchal. Machico has a sand beach and is convenient for eastern days. Caniçal suits time around the eastern peninsula. These are different towns: Garajau on a hillside does not offer the same stay as a hotel on the Reis Magos promenade.

Keep in mind: A car helps connect the towns. Check beach access and evening transport; do not assume every address is on the waterfront.

Black sand, swimmers and green cliffs at Porto do Seixal Beach

North Coast

Porto Moniz · Seixal · São Vicente · Santana

Stay around Porto Moniz, Seixal or São Vicente for the north-west. Choose Santana for different walking days in the north-east. I would consider a night or two here for the experience of waking up on this coast, or a longer stay built around the area.

Keep in mind: The north is generally cloudier and wetter than the south. Santana and Porto Moniz are not interchangeable bases for the same walks.

Where I have stayed with a group

When I return to Madeira I usually stay at home with family. These are the group stays behind my own accommodation advice.

A Porta das Neves, São Gonçalo
I stayed here with a group. The Neves area has views over Funchal and convenient road access. I would look around this area for a house with friends or extended family, but this particular listing advertises space for four. It has entrance steps and street parking; do not assume a private garage or a detached villa.
A cottage in Santo António da Serra
A quieter stay for nature, walks and resting at the house. I found the access less convenient and the setting more remote. Confirm the group’s sleeping arrangements; the listing treats the swim spa and gas barbecue as paid extras.
An apartment near lower Rua 5 de Outubro
This is the kind of location I recommend to younger groups who want to walk to bars and restaurants. It is less quiet and parking can be harder. I have not identified the particular apartment here, so the recommendation is for that central area.

Hotel, apartment or aparthotel?

Airbnb and Booking are booking channels. The useful comparison is the room, services and total cost for your group.

Hotel

For reception, luggage storage and meals or facilities you will use. A practical choice for shorter stays and late arrivals.

Check: breakfast, parking, connecting rooms and whether a “family room” is one shared sleeping space.

Apartment / local accommodation

For a kitchen, living space and separate bedrooms. Often worth comparing for a group or a longer stay.

Check: cleaning fees, actual beds, steps, heating, laundry and late check-in. “Parking nearby” is not a reserved space.

Aparthotel

For a kitchen or kitchenette with hotel facilities. Eden Mar and The Residence are examples to compare.

Check: studio versus separate bedroom, kitchen equipment and which pools or services your unit can use.

Compare the full stay: accommodation + mandatory fees + parking + meals + transport. A cheaper house far uphill may cost more overall if you take taxis every evening.

One base is enough for most first trips

For five to seven days of varied sightseeing, I would normally keep one base. You can change your day’s plans with the weather and avoid packing between hotels.

Split the stay when you want to wake up in the north, spend several days walking in one area, or add a few resort days. A move can fit into a day out; it does not always cost half a day.

For a walking holiday

Without a car, start with Funchal and confirm your transfers. With a car, plot the walks first: repeated west-coast days and repeated Santana days suggest different bases. Town-to-town driving estimates do not include the final mountain road or trailhead parking.

Questions about staying in Madeira

Where is the best place to stay in Madeira for a first visit?

For a first visit combining sightseeing, walks and restaurants, I would choose central Funchal. With a car and a preference for a larger hotel and pool time, compare the Lido and Caniço de Baixo. Calheta and Machico make more sense when beach days or a particular part of the island shape the trip.

Where should I stay in Madeira without a car?

Central Funchal is the simplest starting point for walking around town, bus connections and organised trips. Confirm the exact pick-up point with each tour operator. The Lido can work with buses or taxis; outside Funchal, plan each day’s transport before booking the stay.

Is Funchal or Caniço better?

Choose Funchal for restaurants, bars and city days on foot. Choose Caniço de Baixo or Reis Magos for a quieter seaside hotel, especially with a car. Caniço village and Garajau are not interchangeable with the promenade: check the map and the slope of the access road.

Is Calheta a good base for a first trip?

Yes, if resort time, the sand beach and exploring the west are your priorities. For a first visit spread across the island, I prefer staying near Funchal and visiting Calheta for the day. You can take a resort holiday without a car, but independent sightseeing from Calheta is much easier with one.

Should I stay in one place or move around Madeira?

One base is enough for many five-to-seven-day trips. Split the stay if you want mornings and evenings in the north, several walking days in one area, or a few resort days alongside city days. A change of hotel can fit into a sightseeing day; it does not always cost half a day.

Is a hotel or an apartment better in Madeira?

Choose a hotel for reception, breakfast and facilities you will use. Choose an apartment for a kitchen, living space and separate bedrooms, especially for groups. An aparthotel can combine both. Compare the total for the same people and dates, including parking, cleaning charges, meals and cancellation terms.

Where should I stay for hiking in Madeira?

There is no single best base for every walk. Central Funchal works well for organised transfers. With a car, match the base to the walks: the west for repeated Rabaçal and north-west days, or the north-east for time around Santana and Queimadas. Check trail access separately from town-to-town driving times.
