Christmas and New Year in Madeira
Lights over every street from 1 December, poncha stalls in the city centre, the market night on 23 December and fireworks over the bay at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
My quick take
If you can only pick a few nights, make them 23 December and 31 December, and stay in or near Funchal. Everything else happens around those two.
- Season
- 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027
- Where
- Mostly Funchal; lights in towns all over the island
- Big nights
- 23 December (market night) and 31 December (fireworks)
- Weather
- About 21 °C by day, 16 °C at night in Funchal
Christmas in Madeira starts on 1 December, when Funchal switches on its Christmas lights, and runs until early January. For five weeks the city centre fills with lights, street stalls and music, and it peaks twice: on the market night of 23 December and at midnight on New Year’s Eve, when fireworks go off all around the bay.
I am from Madeira and this is the time of year when the island feels most like itself. Families who live abroad come home, everyone is out in the street, and Funchal is busy until late almost every night. If you want a quiet beach Christmas, it is the wrong month for the city centre. If you want to see how Madeirans celebrate, it is the best month to come.
The Christmas lights
Lights are the thing to see. Funchal hangs them over the main streets, squares and gardens, and they cover the whole downtown from the seafront to the cathedral and the market. At night the effect is hard to describe until you are standing under it: whole streets turn into tunnels of light. Walk the centre after dark at least once, even if you are staying outside the city.
It is not only Funchal. Smaller towns such as Câmara de Lobos and Santa Cruz put up their own lights, and the houses on the hillsides add theirs. The best way to see it all is from above: my favourite spot is the Miradouro das Neves, 283 metres up on the airport road at the eastern edge of Funchal, which looks across the whole lit-up amphitheatre of the city and the bay.
Christmas markets and street stalls
Madeira does not have one big Christmas market in a single square like a German city. The market is spread across central Funchal: wooden stalls selling poncha, homemade liqueurs, food and Christmas plants along Avenida Arriaga and around the Mercado dos Lavradores, with music in the evenings. They draw big crowds of locals, especially after work and at weekends.
What to eat and drink at the stalls:
- Poncha, made with aguardente (sugar-cane spirit), honey and lemon, or with orange or passion fruit
- Homemade liqueurs in fruit flavours, sold by the glass or the bottle
- Sandes de carne de vinha d’alhos, a sandwich of pork marinated in wine and garlic, the Madeiran Christmas dish
- Bolo de mel, the dark Madeiran honey cake made with sugar-cane honey, which keeps for months and travels well
Visit Madeira also lists an ethnographic village at Largo da Restauração, with Madeiran food, handicrafts and folk music.
The Christmas village in Praça do Município
The Câmara Municipal do Funchal sets up a Christmas village, the Aldeia Natal, in Praça do Município, the square in front of the town hall. It is aimed mostly at families with children. Last season (2025–26) it opened from 5 December to 6 January, 10am to 8pm. The 2026 dates had not been announced when I last checked.
23 December: the market night
The Noite do Mercado is the most Madeiran night of the year, and it is the one night I would tell anyone in Madeira at Christmas not to miss.
Christmas traditions you might see
Missas do Parto. In the nine days before Christmas, parishes across the island hold masses at dawn. Afterwards people stay in the church square with sandwiches of carne de vinha d’alhos, homemade liqueurs and singing. Visit Madeira lists them from the second half of December until Christmas Eve. They are religious services, so dress and behave as you would at any mass, but the gathering outside is open to everyone.
Cantar dos Reis. On 5 January at 7pm, a free concert of Epiphany songs takes place at Praça do Povo. On 6 January families share a Bolo-Rei, the Three Kings cake, which hides a broad bean and a small gift.
Christmas Day. 25 December is a family day at home. Many shops and attractions close: the Funchal cable car is closed on 25 December, and so is Monte Palace. Book a hotel or restaurant that serves Christmas lunch if you want a proper meal out.
New Year’s Eve: the fireworks
Funchal’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are among the best known in the world. In 2006 Guinness World Records recognised them as the largest fireworks display on the planet. Because Funchal is built like an amphitheatre around the bay, the fireworks go off from the hills, the seafront and boats at the same time, and wherever you stand facing the sea you are inside the show.
Last season’s display lasted 8 minutes from 58 firing points, with 11 cruise ships anchored in the bay. When the last firework goes off, the ships sound their horns together, and then the party carries on in the streets until morning.
New Year’s Eve needs its own planning: where to watch, getting there and back, hotels and dinner. I have put all of it in a separate guide to New Year’s Eve in Madeira.
Weather in December
December in Funchal is mild. IPMA’s climate normals for the city give an average high of 21 °C and a low of 15.5 °C, with about 9 days of rain in the month. It is the wettest month of the year in Funchal, so bring a light rain jacket, and a warm layer for the evenings out in the street and for anything in the mountains, where it is much colder.
Swimming is possible on sunny days if you do not mind cool water. Trails stay open, but check the official trail status before you go, because winter rain closes some of them. For the weather, the walks and how prices change through the month, see Madeira in December. If you are still choosing between a winter and a summer trip, see the best time to visit Madeira.

Planning a Christmas trip
Book early. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the winter. Flights and rooms for the week of 31 December go first, and bay-view rooms in Funchal sell out months ahead.
Stay in or near Funchal. Almost everything happens in the city centre, often late at night. Staying within walking distance, or a short taxi ride away, makes the evenings easier. Caniço is a quieter option a short drive east.
Without a car. You do not need one for the festivities: the centre is closed to traffic on the big nights anyway. See getting around Madeira for buses and taxis, and the Funchal guide for what to do during the day.
