Funchal seen from the sea, houses climbing the hillside above the harbour, with a tugboat crossing the bay

New Year’s Eve in Madeira

At midnight the whole bay of Funchal goes up in fireworks, from the hills, the seafront and the boats at once, and every cruise ship in the harbour sounds its horn.

My quick take

Watch from somewhere with the whole bay in front of you, be in place well before midnight, and plan to walk afterwards. The party in the streets is half the night.

New Year’s Eve in Madeira means the fireworks over Funchal: about 8 minutes at midnight, fired from 58 points on the hills, along the seafront and from boats in the bay, so the city is lit all around you. Watching is free from anywhere with a view of the bay. The display once held the Guinness World Record, and for most Madeirans it is the best night of the year.

I grew up with this night. It is the one time of year when everybody, locals and visitors, is in the same place looking the same way, and when the first fireworks go up the noise from the crowd is as loud as the show. Even after many years it still gives me goosebumps.

The fireworks, in numbers

In 2006, Guinness World Records recognised Madeira’s New Year’s Eve display as the largest fireworks display in the world. The show has changed since, but it is still built for the shape of the city: Funchal rises from the sea like an amphitheatre, and the fireworks are set off across it.

What happens on the night

The centre of Funchal fills up through the evening. Families have dinner and then come down to the seafront, the cruise ships take their places in the bay, and by midnight the waterfront and the streets above it are packed.

At midnight the fireworks start everywhere at once. When they end, the cruise ships sound their horns together, a long chorus that echoes off the hills, and the city carries on celebrating in the streets, bars and squares until morning.

The ships are part of the show. Cruise lines plan their calls so they are anchored in Funchal for the night, and at midnight they are lit up across the bay without blocking the view from land.

Where to watch the fireworks

Anywhere with an open view of the bay works, because the fireworks are spread across the whole city. The choice is between being in the crowd and seeing the whole picture.

WhereWhat it is likeBook?
Seafront and marina (Avenida do Mar)In the middle of the crowd, with fireworks overhead and the ships in front. Busy for hours before midnight; arrive early for a spot by the water. No, free
Hillsides above the cityYou see the whole amphitheatre lit at once, the best view of the show as a whole. Quieter, but colder and windier after dark. No, free
Hotel or restaurant terrace facing the bayThe comfortable option, usually with dinner and a drink included. The good ones sell out early.Yes, well ahead
A boat in the bayThe closest view, with the city and the fireworks all around you. Limited places and higher prices. See the catamaran option.Yes, well ahead

I watch the fireworks from a relative’s house near Monte. Being that high up, you see the fireworks across the whole city at once, and the ships in the bay below. If you do not have a balcony up the hill, the Miradouro das Neves, 283 metres up on the airport road at the eastern edge of Funchal, gives you a similar view of the bay for free. Down by the coast you also see the show well; you just see it from inside the crowd.

The luxury option

See midnight from a catamaran in the bay

If New Year’s Eve in Madeira is the reason for the trip, this is the way to finish it. From the water you have the fireworks on the hills, the seafront and the boats all around you, the city lit up behind them, and the cruise ships sounding their horns a few hundred metres away. Dinner and drinks are on board, so there is no queue, no crowd and no taxi to find.

I have not done this trip myself; I watch from the hills. It costs much more than watching from the street, and places are limited, so it sells out well before December.

Getting there and getting back

Leave the car. The centre of Funchal closes to traffic for the night, and driving down from the hills just before midnight is the worst plan you can have. Walk, or get a taxi or bus early in the evening.

Plan the way home. Taxis are hard to find in the first hour after midnight. If you are staying outside the centre, book a taxi in advance or choose a room within walking distance of the seafront. For buses and taxis, see getting around Madeira.

Dress for the evening. Funchal averages 15.5 °C at night in December, and it feels colder by the sea or up on the hills when the wind blows. Bring a warm layer and a light rain jacket. In 2025 a storm was forecast for the night, and the show still went ahead at midnight.

Hotels and dinner: book early

The week of 31 December is the busiest of the winter in Madeira. Rooms with a view of the bay in Funchal sell out first and cost much more that week, so book them as early as you can and ask for written confirmation that the room faces the bay. A room higher up the hill is cheaper and often has a wider view of the fireworks.

Restaurants in central Funchal take New Year’s Eve bookings well in advance, often for a set menu. If you want to eat out on the 31st, book when you book your room.

More than one night

New Year’s Eve sits in the middle of five weeks of Christmas festivities in Funchal, with the lights on from 1 December and stalls in the streets all month. If you arrive a week early you also get the market night on 23 December, the most traditional night of the Madeiran Christmas. Questions about New Year’s Eve in Madeira

What time are the New Year fireworks in Madeira?

At midnight on 31 December, over the bay of Funchal. In 2025 bad weather was forecast and an earlier show was considered, but the regional government kept it at midnight.

How long do the Funchal fireworks last?

About 8 minutes. The 2025–26 show lasted 8 minutes and was fired from 58 points around the bay (RTP, January 2026).

Where is the best place to watch the fireworks in Funchal?

Anywhere with an open view of the bay. The seafront and the marina put you in the middle of the crowd; the hillsides above the city, such as the Miradouro das Neves on the airport road, show you the whole amphitheatre at once; a hotel terrace or a boat in the bay is the comfortable option, and both need booking.

Did Madeira hold the world record for fireworks?

Yes. In 2006 Guinness World Records recognised Madeira’s New Year’s Eve display as the largest fireworks display in the world.

Do I need to book anything for New Year’s Eve in Madeira?

Watching from the street is free and needs no ticket. Book everything else early: flights, a room for that week, dinner on the 31st, and any terrace, boat or party you want to be at for midnight.

Is New Year’s Eve in Madeira worth it?

Yes, if you do not mind crowds. The fireworks from the hills, the seafront and the boats at once, the cruise ships sounding their horns and the party in the streets afterwards make it the biggest night of the year on the island.
