Madeira by bus: where you can go, and how to get back

From a base in Funchal, the public buses reach most of the places visitors come for, from Monte to Porto Moniz, for €2.65 a ride. The catch is the bus back: on the far side of the island there are one or two a day.

Day trips by bus, with the bus back

For each place, the bus that gets you there and the one that brings you home. For the far side of the island, these are the only choices of the day.

Lines 340 and 380 · old 139 and 80

Porto Moniz

Two buses a day go to Porto Moniz, one each way round the island. The 340 leaves Funchal at 09:00 and crosses the mountains via Encumeada, São Vicente and Seixal, arriving at 12:30. The 380 leaves at 10:00 along the south and west coast, via Ponta do Sol and Calheta, arriving at 13:05 (12:45 at weekends).

Three and a half to five hours: the pools, lunch and a walk

This is a regular bus, not a tour. It does not wait at Cabo Girão or Seixal for photos, and if you get off on the way, the next 340 is tomorrow. Going out on the 340 and back on the 381 shows you both coasts, but that is about seven hours sitting on a bus.

The 340 reaches São Vicente at 11:50 and Seixal at 12:10. Coming back, the 341 passes Seixal at 17:15 on weekdays and 17:45 at weekends. That gives you about five hours on the black sand beach, with nothing else to catch if you miss it.

Câmara de Lobos and Cabo Girão

Câmara de Lobos is on most buses heading west that do not take the expressway, about half an hour from Funchal. For the Cabo Girão skywalk, take the 267, the Ribeira Brava line that goes via Cabo Girão: from Funchal on weekdays at 11:00 and 15:30, on Saturdays at 10:05, 11:00 and 12:15, on Sundays at 10:05, 12:05 and 13:30. The 340 also passes at 09:50 every day, but does not wait.

Coming back via Cabo Girão, the 267 leaves Ribeira Brava on weekdays at 10:10, 11:00 and 12:35. After that, use any bus to Câmara de Lobos or Funchal from the main road.

Paying for the Aerobus

The safe option is €6.70 in cash to the driver. The usual tip: pay on board when you land, then buy a GIRO card in Funchal (€0.50) and load the €5.55 ticket for the ride back. The official list of sales points now includes a ticket machine in the arrivals hall, which most guides do not mention yet; we have not tested it.

Going to the airport, the bus passes the city centre 15 to 30 minutes after leaving Praia Formosa. The last one leaves Praia Formosa at 21:00, so for an early flight, aim for an earlier bus.

Timetable: SIGA timetable: Aerobus. Sales points: SIGA: points of sale. Both checked 24 October 2026.

What the bus cannot do

Be honest with yourself about these before you skip the hire car. For one or two of these days, a day tour usually costs less than you think.

  • Sunrise anywhere except Pico do Arieiro

A sunrise tour, or the Arieiro bus, which reaches the summit before dawn all year.

  • Fanal, the PR6 (25 Fontes) and the PR9 (Caldeirão Verde)

No regular bus reaches the trailheads. A day tour or a taxi both ways.

  • Several viewpoints in one day

The long-distance buses do not wait. Cabo Girão, Encumeada and Seixal pass by the window. A tour stops at each one.

  • Linear walks that end far from the start

The full PR1 to Pico Ruivo ends at Achada do Teixeira, with no bus. Book a transfer or a guided walk.

  • Sunset in the west, then back to Funchal

The last buses from Paúl do Mar and Porto Moniz leave in the afternoon. A taxi back, or a night there.

  • Arriving after the last Aerobus

The last Aerobus leaves the airport at 22:00. After that, a taxi or a booked transfer.

Day tours for the places buses miss

How the buses work

One network, SIGA, three companies, one ticket system. This is what confuses visitors most.

  1. 1

    Three companies, one network

Horários do Funchal: Funchal city lines, Monte, Botanical Garden, Curral das Freiras and the Pico do Arieiro bus. Rodoeste: The west: Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, Calheta, São Vicente, Porto Moniz. CAM: The east and north-east: airport (Aerobus), Caniço, Garajau, Machico, Caniçal, Santana, Ribeiro Frio.

  2. 2

Cash to the driver, or a GIRO card

On board you pay €2.05 in Funchal or €2.65 for any intercity ride, cash only. A paper GIRO card costs €0.50 and makes each ride €1.45 or €2. The driver cannot top it up: load it at a ticket machine (Marina and Baião on Avenida do Mar, the Teleférico; SIGA also lists one at the airport), a SIGA counter, or a Payshop newsagent.

  3. 3

    Day tickets

The regional tourist ticket covers every line, the Aerobus included: €13.75 for a day, €23 for three, €36 for seven. With an intercity ride at €2 on the card, it only pays off on very busy days; ask at a SIGA counter where it is sold.

  4. 4

    Read the right column

Each sheet has columns for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays with public holidays. Some trips run only in school term; ignore those. The time printed is when the bus leaves its first stop, not your stop.

  5. 5

    No live times

There is no real-time tracking. Be at the stop early, plan the way back before you set off, and on the far side of the island aim for the second-to-last bus. No bus runs on 25 December.

Old and new line numbers

Since 9 March 2026 every line has a three-digit number. Many sheets, stops and older guides still show the old one.

Without a car, stay in Funchal

Every line on this page starts or ends in Funchal, so it is the only base where you can reach both coasts without changing buses. Caniço and Machico have their own lines to Funchal, but going west from there means a change in the city.

Questions about Madeira buses

Can you get around Madeira by bus?

Yes, from a base in Funchal. Buses reach Monte, the Botanical Garden, Câmara de Lobos, Garajau, Machico, Caniçal, Curral das Freiras, Ribeiro Frio, Santana, Pico do Arieiro, Paúl do Mar and Porto Moniz. Near Funchal there are buses all day; the far side of the island has one or two a day, so you plan around the bus back.

How much is the bus in Madeira?

Paid to the driver in cash, €2.05 inside Funchal and €2.65 for any intercity trip, however long. With a GIRO card loaded in advance it is €1.45 and €2. The Aerobus is €6.70 on board or €5.55 prepaid.

Can I pay by card on Madeira buses?

No. Tickets bought from the driver are cash only, contactless included. Carry coins and small notes, enough for the way back too.

Is there a bus from Funchal to Porto Moniz?

Yes, two, once a day each. Line 340 leaves Funchal at 09:00 and goes over the mountains via São Vicente and Seixal, reaching Porto Moniz at 12:30. Line 380 leaves at 10:00 along the south and west coast. Both come back in the late afternoon.

How do I get from Madeira Airport to Funchal by bus?

Take the Aerobus (line 500) from outside arrivals. It runs from 08:30 to 22:00, takes about 50 minutes to Praia Formosa and stops in the centre after about 22 minutes. Pay €6.70 in cash to the driver.

Why do the bus numbers in my guidebook not match?

Every line was renumbered on 9 March 2026, to three digits. Many timetable sheets and older guides still show the old number. This page gives both.

Do Madeira buses run on Sundays?

Yes, almost all of them, with fewer departures. Sheets have separate columns for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and public holidays. No bus runs on 25 December.
