Caniço spreading down the hillside towards the Atlantic Ocean

Caniço, Madeira:
my guide to Reis Magos

A calmer place to stay by the Atlantic, with the beach I grew up on a few minutes from your door.

My quick take

Stay in Caniço if you want the sea close by, an easy evening beside it and a car to explore Madeira. It is quieter than Funchal, not isolated. If being able to walk to a lot of nightlife every night matters most, stay in Funchal instead.

Best for
A quiet coastal base, swimming and travellers with a hire car
Main beach
Reis Magos, a pebble beach in Caniço de Baixo
From promenade
About 18 minutes to Funchal; 12 minutes to the airport by car
Getting around
A car is easiest; check SIGA for buses on your dates

The sea below, everyday Caniço above

Caniço de Baixo is the lower, seafront part of town: hotels, the promenade and the Atlantic. The town centre sits higher up the hill and feels more like the everyday Caniço I grew up in.

That split is what makes the area work. You can come back from a day driving around Madeira, swim or walk by the sea, then have a quieter evening than you would in Funchal. The fast road also makes the airport, Funchal and the east of the island simple day trips.

How Caniço compares with Funchal and the west is in my guide to where to stay in Madeira; hotel comparisons come later, once they can be reviewed properly with current prices. A hotel should not make this page just because it pays a commission.

Pebble shore and clear Atlantic water at Reis Magos Beach in Caniço

Reis Magos Beach

The beach where I spent my childhood

Like most beaches in Madeira, Reis Magos is a pebble beach. Sandy beaches are the exception on the island, not the rule, and it is still my favourite beach in Caniço. I spent much of my childhood here. There are three ways into the sea, so you can choose the one that suits the conditions and how confident you feel in the water.

This is a proper Atlantic swim, not a shallow sheltered cove. That is exactly why I like it. The official beach information lists a concrete sunbathing area, pier, parking, accessible toilets, a bar and restaurant, first aid and lifeguards during the bathing season.

My beach stop: Nova Onda, beside the beach, for something cold and a few snacks after swimming.

Walk the promenade at the end of the day

The Promenade dos Reis Magos runs along the coast between Reis Magos and the Galomar area. It is an easy walk for sea views, hotel spotting and slowing down after a day on the road.

At the far end, I recommend a digestif at Mini Eco Container. It is small, relaxed and built around the sound of the water, which is exactly the point.

Eat where Caniço eats

The places I would send a friend are not limited to the seafront. Start with one experience that you are unlikely to find on a standard hotel list.

Talho do Caniço

This is my strongest food recommendation in the area. Choose your meat at the butcher's counter, take it to the grilling area next door and cook it yourself. There is always someone around to help if you need it.

It is informal, hands-on and very Madeiran. Buy the meat, add bread and a drink, take a place by the grill and do not expect polished restaurant service. That is the point.

O Picadinho

Hidden gem

Order the picadinho: meat with chips and sauce, a proper Madeiran comfort-food plate. It is a place locals use because it is good without making lunch expensive. Budget around €10–€15 per person, then confirm the price when you order.

For poncha, a prego and a good evening

Venda do Bello Hidden gem is the choice for excellent ponchas, a prego and the easy atmosphere of a traditional venda. It makes a very good unhurried lunch.

O Moega is where I go for the huge choice of poncha flavours and beers. Each drink comes with a chicken wing as a small aperitivo; if you are hungry, add a prego. The official tourism listing also mentions the wings and pregos.

Village Pub is my pick for an even wider beer selection and good snacks. Order a prego. It is up in town rather than on the seafront, which suits an evening after exploring elsewhere.

Opening days, prices and menus change, so check before you make a special journey. Next door in Santa Cruz, there is also a swim under the airport runway: see my hidden gems.

A very workable base, especially with a car

Caniço has several fast-road connections. That is why it works so well for a trip that wants both the south coast and days elsewhere on the island. Not sure you need one? See do you need a car in Madeira.

Funchal

About 18 minutes from the Reis Magos promenade in normal traffic. Near enough for dinner; far enough to come back to quiet.

Madeira Airport

About 12 minutes by car in normal traffic. Leave a margin for rain, traffic and the usual last-day rush.

The rest of Madeira

For the eastern peninsula, levadas, north coast and west, a car gives you far more freedom than relying on a fixed bus timetable.

Nearby

  • Garajau & Cristo Rei The cable car, statue and marine reserve make it a different stop from Reis Magos, not an add-on to rush through.
  • Funchal The island’s capital for the Old Town, a bigger choice of restaurants and evenings out.
  • Machico Madeira’s original harbour town, with a sheltered bay and a different feel from the south-coast hotel zone.

The nearby Reis Magos Fort is currently marked as closed for maintenance, so check its current status before planning a visit inside.

Questions about Caniço

Is Caniço a good place to stay in Madeira?

Yes, particularly if you want a quiet coastal base, an easy swim at Reis Magos and a hire car for the island. Funchal is the better choice for a bigger nightlife and restaurant scene within walking distance.

Is Reis Magos Beach sandy?

No. Like most beaches in Madeira, Reis Magos is a pebble beach with a concrete sunbathing area and a pier. Sandy beaches are the exception on the island. It has several ways into the Atlantic, so choose the entrance that suits the sea conditions and your confidence in the water.

How far is Caniço from Funchal and Madeira Airport?

From the Reis Magos promenade, Funchal is about 18 minutes by car and Madeira Airport about 12 minutes in normal traffic. Allow more time in rush hour or poor weather.

Do I need a car in Caniço?

Not necessarily if you are staying in Caniço de Baixo and are happy with taxis and buses. A car makes Caniço much more useful as a base for the east, Funchal and the north and west of Madeira.
