Calheta’s two golden-sand bathing bays, stone breakwaters and marina seen from above

Calheta Beach
& beyond

Calheta is a seaside town on Madeira’s south-west coast, known for its imported golden-sand beach and marina. Come for a swim or a boat trip, then explore the rum mill, contemporary art and mountain walks above the coast.

My quick take

With children who want sand, yes. For the villages and coastline I most enjoy, I would carry on to Jardim do Mar and Paúl do Mar. Calheta works well as part of that day.

Golden sand on a volcanic island

Calheta Beach, Praia da Calheta, opened in 2004 with sand brought from Morocco. Breakwaters hold the beach in place and shelter the bathing area. Sandcastles are possible here, which is a good enough reason to choose it when you have small children.

The council describes 2 artificial inlets. You can see both in the photograph: sandy curves facing one another, with an opening to the Atlantic between them. Sheltered water still needs a check of the beach flags on the day.

For my own beach day, I usually want the pebbles, cliffs and village setting further west. If that is your idea of Madeira too, use the beach guide to compare Calheta with Jardim do Mar, Garajau and Seixal.

What to do in Calheta

Leave time for the waterfront, but look above it too. The mill and museum give a different view of this part of Madeira.

Head out from the marina

Calheta is a departure point for whale and dolphin watching. Lobosonda runs trips from Calheta harbour, with traditional-boat and RIB options. Sightings depend on wildlife and conditions.

The departure information here comes from the operator. Compare the options in the whale-watching guide; if you specifically want a catamaran, check the boat guide and its departure ports.

Departure checked with Lobosonda, 30 October 2026.

Visit Engenho da Calheta

This sugar-cane mill in the town makes Madeira rum and cane syrup, known locally as mel de cana. Its machinery connects a beach visit with the crop that helped shape the island.

The facilities include a tasting room. Production is seasonal, usually after Easter; a visit outside crushing season does not mean seeing the mill at work.

Go uphill to MUDAS

Madeira’s contemporary art museum sits above the town in a building designed by Paulo David. Visit for the exhibitions and the architecture overlooking the coast.

It is a separate stop uphill from the marina. Check the museum’s current programme and opening days before you make the journey.

Walks above Calheta: Rabaçal

The beach is at sea level. The levadas start inland in the mountains, reached by road. Plan the walk first and leave the beach as a flexible stop afterwards.

  • PR6 · Levada das 25 Fontes

The walk to a lagoon fed by springs below Paul da Serra. Choose it for the forest and the water at the end; allow for the uphill return.

Official difficulty: Moderate. Check trail status and access.

  • PR6.1 · Levada do Risco

A route to a viewpoint facing the Risco waterfall. It shares the initial approach with 25 Fontes, but it is a separate classified trail.

Official difficulty: Easy. Check trail status and access.

  • PR6.2 · Levada do Alecrim

A levada through mountain heath to Lagoa Dona Beja. This is an alternative to the 25 Fontes route, rather than another stop on the same walk.

Official difficulty: Easy. Check trail status and access.

Visit Madeira listed these routes as open when checked on 30 October 2026. Check again for your walking day; follow current booking requirements and signs on the trail. Distances vary with the approach you choose.

How I would fit Calheta into a day

For a relaxed coastal day, start with the mill or MUDAS, have lunch by the marina and leave the afternoon for the beach. Continue west if you want a change of scenery before sunset.

For a walking day, choose one Rabaçal route in the morning. If you still have time and energy afterwards, come down to Calheta for a swim. I would not book a fixed boat departure on top of that plan.

Getting here and parking

From Funchal, follow the south-coast route towards Ribeira Brava, then the VE3 west through Ponta do Sol towards Calheta. Set your destination to the beach or marina if you are visiting the waterfront.

Parking is rarely the problem here: there are covered, underground and open-air car parks near the beach, the marina and the centre. The council lists 3 car parks and disabled parking spaces along Avenida D. Manuel I. Read the current signs for charges and restrictions. The council’s online page includes older tariffs, so I would check them on arrival.

Without a car, check SIGA’s current timetable against your destination and return journey. A bus stop in the wider Calheta area may be well uphill from the sand.

A few things that explain Calheta

The beach is recent; the wider landscape tells a much older story.

  • The name covers a whole municipality

Jardim do Mar, Paúl do Mar and Prazeres are part of the wider Calheta area. A search result for “Calheta” might mean a fishing village, a hillside stay or the beach itself.

  • Madeira rum starts with sugar cane

At the Engenho, fermented cane juice becomes rum, while cane juice is also cooked into syrup. Mel de cana translates as “cane honey”; it is not honey made by bees.

  • A levada can do more than irrigate fields

The Levada do Alecrim was built to supply Calheta’s hydroelectric power station. The channels you walk beside are working infrastructure as well as a reason to explore the mountains.

Nearby

  • Jardim do Mar One of my favourite places for a beach day, with a village atmosphere and pebble shore.
  • Paúl do Mar The fishing harbour, seafront bars and my favourite sunset at Maktub Pub.
  • Ponta do Sol A pebble beach and the old quay, east of Calheta on the way to Funchal.
  • Ribeira Brava The town beach, island history and the inland turn for Serra de Água.
  • Rabaçal Inland and uphill, for forest walks and waterfalls. Arrange transport to the trailhead.

For me, Calheta is a stop on a wider west-coast day. Keep time for the villages beyond it.

Questions about Calheta

Is Calheta Beach natural?

No. Calheta Beach opened in 2004 as an artificial beach with golden sand imported from Morocco. The water is the Atlantic, sheltered by breakwaters.

Is Calheta Beach free?

Yes, access to the beach is free. Equipment and services such as sun loungers and parasols are charged separately. Check current prices at the beach.

Is Calheta worth visiting?

Yes, particularly for a sandy beach day with children or a boat trip from the marina. Add the sugar-cane mill or MUDAS for a cultural stop. For village atmosphere, I would also go to Jardim do Mar and Paúl do Mar.

Is there parking at Calheta Beach?

The council lists 3 car parks and disabled parking bays along Avenida D. Manuel I. Check the signs for current charges and restrictions; free beach entry does not mean free parking.

Can you walk from Calheta Beach to 25 Fontes?

Treat 25 Fontes as a separate mountain outing. The classified trail starts at Rabaçal on the ER105, not at the beach. Arrange a car, transfer or tour to the trailhead and check access before leaving.

Should I stay in Calheta or Funchal?

I would choose Funchal for a first trip, particularly for restaurants and evenings on foot. Calheta suits a quieter beach-focused holiday or days exploring the west, with a car. Check whether your accommodation is by the waterfront or up the hillside.
