Ribeira Brava’s pebble beach with straw parasols, wooden walkways and a stone breakwater under a cloudy sky

Ribeira Brava

Ribeira Brava is a town on Madeira’s south coast with a pebble beach, a historic centre and a valley leading inland towards Serra de Água and Encumeada. It makes a useful stop on the way west; my regular detour is Taberna da Poncha, up the valley.

My quick take

Taberna da Poncha is my favourite bar on the island. I stop whenever I am going this way, for the poncha, the setting and the atmosphere. It is in Serra de Água, separate from the seaside town.

What to do in Ribeira Brava town

Start on foot. The seafront and historic centre are the town visit; Serra de Água and the mountain viewpoints need a separate journey.

  • Look inside São Bento Church

The church on Rua dos Camachos has Manueline, Mannerist and Baroque features. Inside, look for the gilded woodwork and religious art rather than only photographing the tower from the square.

Heritage: Visit Madeira: São Bento Church, checked 30 October 2026.

  • Find the little fort by the sea

São Bento Fort is the round tower on the waterfront. Built in 1708 to protect the coast and anchorage, it now houses a tourist information office. Its size makes it an easy detail to walk past.

History and use: Visit Madeira: São Bento Fort, checked 30 October 2026.

  • Go to the market on a Saturday morning

The municipal market near the fort is a traditional market, and it is at its liveliest on Saturday mornings, with fruit and regional produce. Continue through the centre, with a café stop if it suits your day.

Town sights: Ribeira Brava council, checked 30 October 2026.

  • Climb to the São Sebastião viewpoint

The viewpoint sits on a rock above the town, reached by the Caminho de São Sebastião, and looks along the coast from Quinta Grande to Ponta do Sol. For a longer stop on the way back towards Funchal, Fajã dos Padres, in the Câmara de Lobos municipality, is on the way.

Viewpoint: Visit Madeira: São Sebastião Viewpoint, checked 31 October 2026. The market tip comes from Michael.

The beach and bathing complex

Ribeira Brava’s beach is pebbles mixed with some black sand. It is on the town’s waterfront, so you can combine a visit to the centre with time by the sea.

Visit Madeira lists free access, swimming pools, including one for children, changing rooms, toilets, a bar and restaurant. It also describes walkways and a lift from the car park to the sunbathing area.

Check which facilities are operating when you arrive, particularly outside the bathing season. The photograph shows the pebble shore in winter; it is not a promise of the day’s sea conditions or services.

Facilities and access: Visit Madeira: Ribeira Brava Bathing Complex, checked 30 October 2026.

The museum explains life beyond the viewpoints

The Madeira Ethnographic Museum, Museu Etnográfico da Madeira, is on Rua de São Francisco. Its permanent collections cover productive activities, transport, domestic life and traditional trade.

The building itself was once an industrial site with sugar-cane processing and distilling equipment. That makes the museum a useful cultural stop if your holiday so far has been mostly beaches and mountain scenery.

Check the museum’s current opening days before making it the main reason for your visit.

Taberna da Poncha, up in Serra de Água

This is my favourite bar on the island. It is in Serra de Água, within the municipality of Ribeira Brava, not on the beach or in the seaside centre.

I ask for poncha regional or poncha pescador. The poncha is very good, but the atmosphere is a big part of why I keep going back: peanuts come with the drink, and the shells go on the floor. The walls are filled with visitors’ cards, coins, foreign notes and things people have left behind.

My family has never had a bad experience there. It is a regular stop whenever I am travelling on this side of the island, with the valley scenery adding to the visit.

Poncha contains sugar-cane spirit. Arrange a driver who is not drinking if you are combining the stop with a drive into the mountains.

Personal recommendation: Michael. Location cross-checked with Time Out’s Taberna da Poncha listing. No unverified prices or opening hours are printed here.

Serra de Água and the road towards Encumeada

The valley changes the day completely: you leave the seafront behind and climb towards Madeira’s central mountains.

Encumeada Viewpoint is at 1,007 m, with views into the Ribeira Brava and São Vicente valleys when the cloud allows. Pousada dos Vinháticos is another viewpoint in the Serra de Água area.

For a scenic outing, treat the viewpoints as stops of their own. The direct road connection towards São Vicente and the mountain detour are different choices; allow for the route you actually intend to drive.

Walks around Encumeada

These are mountain outings reached by road from the Ribeira Brava area. They are not walks starting on the town beach.

  • PR22 Vereda do Chão dos Louros

A circular forest walk on the São Vicente side of Encumeada. Of these options, it is the shorter one to investigate for a day that also includes town stops.

Check the PR22 route and access.

  • PR17 Pináculo e Folhadal

This is a demanding route with levadas, tunnels and mountain terrain. It has a restriction: Passable only between Encumeada, Folhadal, Caramujo and Bica da Cana. Do not assume the full route from Lombo do Mouro is available.

Read the official PR17 access note.

  • PR12 Caminho Real da Encumeada

The name is not a promise that you can walk through to Encumeada. Passable only from Boca da Corrida to km 3.5. It is not presented here as a complete cross-mountain route.

Access notes checked 30 October 2026: IFCN classified trail notices. Confirm the exact open section, transport and booking requirements before setting out.

Choose the shape of your day

Ribeira Brava sits at a useful junction. Pick a direction instead of trying to cover the whole west and the mountains at once.

Keep following the coast

Visit the town, then continue to Ponta do Sol or Calheta. With more time, save the late afternoon for Jardim do Mar and the sunset at Paúl do Mar.

Turn inland

Combine the town with Serra de Água and the mountain viewpoints, subject to weather and road access. If you choose a hike, make that the main activity and leave the town or poncha stop flexible.

A historical reason for the crossroads: the council describes the old harbour as a meeting point for coastal travel, journeys across the island and goods arriving by sea. Ribeira Brava council.

Nearby

  • Ponta do Sol The next coastal village west, with a pebble cove and old quay.
  • Calheta Golden sand, a marina and a different sort of beach day.
  • Serra de Água The inland valley and Taberna da Poncha, separate from the town centre.
  • Encumeada Mountain views and trail access, with route restrictions to check.

The coastal stops are one direction; Serra de Água and Encumeada take you inland. Check the road notice before combining them.

Questions about Ribeira Brava

Is Ribeira Brava worth visiting?

Yes, as a stop on a west-coast day or before heading inland. The seafront, São Bento Church and the Ethnographic Museum give you a mix of beach and town. My own regular stop in the wider municipality is Taberna da Poncha in Serra de Água.

Is there a sandy beach in Ribeira Brava?

The shore is pebbles with some black sand, rather than a golden-sand beach. The official tourism board lists a bathing complex with pools, including one for children. For golden sand, compare Calheta or Machico.

Is Ribeira Brava Beach free?

Visit Madeira lists free access to the bathing complex. Check the current operation of pools and any equipment charges at the site; free access does not mean every service is included.

Where is Taberna da Poncha?

In Serra de Água, up the valley in the municipality of Ribeira Brava. It is not on the town’s seafront. I order poncha regional or poncha pescador there.

What is poncha?

Poncha is a Madeiran drink made with sugar-cane spirit, citrus and honey or sugar, with variations between recipes. At Taberna da Poncha, my usual choices are regional or pescador. Arrange a driver who is not drinking if it is part of a road trip.

Can I drive from Encumeada to Paul da Serra?

The ER105 is listed as closed between Encumeada and Paul da Serra (Lombo do Mouro). Do not plan to drive through that section. Checked against the regional government road notice on 30 October 2026. Recheck the official notice before travelling.

Are the walks near Encumeada fully open?

Do not assume they are. PR17 has a restricted passable section and PR12 is only partly accessible. Check the IFCN notices and plan the exact route, transport and booking before leaving. Last checked 30 October 2026.
