Jardim do Mar
Jardim do Mar is a small village below the cliffs on Madeira’s south-west coast, with narrow lanes, a seafront promenade and pebble beaches. It is one of my favourite places for a swim, and an easy village to miss on a busy west-coast itinerary.
My quick take
For the water at Portinho and a slow afternoon by the sea. My parents often sit at the bar while I swim. You do not need a long list of attractions to enjoy Jardim do Mar.
- Best for
- A village walk and a calm-sea swim
- Shore
- Pebbles and a small dock at Portinho
- Trail access
- PR20 closed when checked
- Combine with
- Calheta, Prazeres and Paúl do Mar
Walk through the village to the sea
Jardim do Mar sits on a fajã, a strip of land at the foot of the cliffs. Leave the car at the village entrance and explore the centre on foot. The narrow lanes lead past low houses and the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário towards the waterfront.
The promenade gives you a different view: the Atlantic on one side, the cliff and village on the other. Walk it without treating the sea as the only destination. This is a good stop even when you leave your swimming things in the car.
Before or after your walk, look for the viewpoint at the entrance to the village. It helps you see how little space separates the mountain from the water.

Portinho: where I go for a swim
Portinho is at the eastern end of Jardim do Mar. The shore is basalt pebbles, with a small dock and a boat ramp. My way into the water is down the steps into the dock.
You may see locals, me included, using the boat ramp. I do not recommend it to visitors because it is slippery. You might also see teenagers doing acrobatics off it; that is not an invitation to follow them.
The Cafetaria Portinho is part of the afternoon for my family. My parents often sit there watching while I am in the water.
For something to eat in the village, I have been to Joe’s Bar, up in the narrow old lanes that make Jardim do Mar what it is. For a proper meal, though, I would drive the few minutes on to O Ideal in Paúl do Mar.
Choose a calm day for swimming. When the swell is up, watch the sea from shore and keep the promenade and village as your plan.

A surf coast, rather than a beginner beach
The sea that makes this coast appealing for a swim on a calm day can look very different when a swell arrives.
Portinho and Enseada
Both are known to surfers. Visit Madeira describes point and reef breaks at Portinho and advanced or expert conditions at Enseada. Watching from shore can be the better way to enjoy a big-sea day.

If you are learning
Do not choose a break from a photograph. Book with a surf school and let the instructor choose the location for your level and that day’s conditions. I am not presenting Jardim do Mar as a first-lesson spot.
Compare swimming beaches insteadWalks: separate the promenade from the mountain paths
A walk around the village needs different planning from a descent off the plateau.
PR20 is closed
PR20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar is closed. Do not use it to descend from Prazeres; visit the village by road instead. The historic trail links Prazeres and Jardim do Mar. Its closure concerns the trail, not the village visit.
Checked 30 October 2026: IFCN notices and PR20 visitor information.
For a gentle outing
Stay with the village lanes and seafront promenade. Return through the village, with a café stop if you want one. Do not extend this into an assumed coastal path to Paúl do Mar.
PR19 descends to Paúl do Mar
The neighbouring route from Prazeres ends in a different village. It is a steep stepped descent, so arrange the return transport before starting. It is an option for a walking day, rather than a substitute path into Jardim do Mar.
Check PR19 access and read the booking rules.
Rabaçal is another outing
For levadas and waterfalls, drive inland to the Rabaçal area. The Calheta guide compares 25 Fontes, Risco and Alecrim. These walks do not start at Jardim do Mar’s promenade.
How I would fit it into a west-coast day
Come to Jardim do Mar with time to walk through the lanes and sit by the sea. If the water suits, make Portinho the swim. If it does not, enjoy the promenade and have a drink or something to eat.
Then continue by road to Paúl do Mar. That is where I would save time for the end of the day, especially for the sunset at Maktub Pub.
With children who want a sandy beach, you can swap the swimming stop for Calheta and still visit Jardim do Mar for the village walk.
Finish with the Paúl do Mar sunset
Getting here, and what the name tells you
Jardim do Mar belongs to the municipality of Calheta, but it is a village of its own.
Arrive at the village entrance
Follow the south-coast road via Ribeira Brava and west beyond Calheta, then the signs for Jardim do Mar. Park in the designated area at the entrance and continue on foot. Read the signs for current restrictions and charges.
Without a car, check SIGA’s timetable for the village and your return journey; do not assume a service to Calheta reaches Jardim do Mar.
“Garden of the Sea”
The name translates as Garden of the Sea. Visit Madeira connects it with the wild flowers that once covered the area. The village’s position on a fajã explains the contrast you see today: cliffs rising behind the houses, with the promenade along the water.

Nearby
- Paúl do Mar A fishing harbour, seafront bars and my favourite sunset.
- Calheta Golden sand, the marina and boat departures.
- Prazeres The village above the coastal cliffs. Access the coast by road while PR20 is closed.
- Rabaçal The inland option for a planned day of levadas and waterfalls.
Combine the coastal villages by road. The promenade is not a verified through-route to Paúl do Mar.
Questions about Jardim do Mar
Is Jardim do Mar worth visiting?
Yes, if you enjoy small villages, seafront walks and time by the water. It is one of my favourite places for a beach day in Madeira. Combine it with Calheta or Paúl do Mar rather than filling the day with a list of sights.
Does Jardim do Mar have a sandy beach?
No. Portinho and Enseada are pebble beaches. At Portinho, I use the small dock area for swimming when conditions allow. Calheta is the nearby option for imported golden sand.
Can you swim at Jardim do Mar?
Yes, in suitable calm conditions. At Portinho, steps lead into a small dock. I do not recommend the slippery boat ramp to visitors. This is also a surf coast; if the swell is up, stay out and enjoy the village instead.
Is the PR20 walk to Jardim do Mar open?
PR20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar is closed. Do not use it to descend from Prazeres; visit the village by road instead. This was checked on 30 October 2026; consult the IFCN notices again for your visit.
Can beginners surf at Jardim do Mar?
The official tourism board describes Portinho and Enseada as spots for experienced surfers. For a first lesson, ask a surf school to choose an appropriate location for the conditions.
Can I walk along the coast to Paúl do Mar?
The promenade is a walk within Jardim do Mar, not a verified walking connection to Paúl do Mar. For the village combination in this guide, travel between them by road.
